2023 World Cleanup Day
Joining Hands for a Cleaner Future, Embracing Compostable Solutions

[Australia, September 2023] – As the world faces the reality of environmental damage with the escalation of climate change and pollution, the significance of World Cleanup Day has become more critical than ever. On the third Saturday of September, the world will unite against rubbish and the litter that reaches every corner of the globe. This day symbolises the importance of a worldwide effort to advocate for waste reduction and foster a more sustainable future. Biotuff is encouraging all Australians to embrace this vital day on September 16th.

But it's not just about cleaning up! World Cleanup Day is also about inspiring lasting change within our local communities.

"World Cleanup Day is much more important than just cleaning up our streets, beaches and parks of rubbish," Nadia Steele from Biotuff says. "It's a global movement that can redefine our relationship with our local environment while providing an opportunity to start important conversations around climate change, environmental movements and the importance of inspiring real change.”

Biotuff supports engaging in cleanup efforts around your local community while encouraging waste reduction. All Australians can contribute to a healthier and more sustainable planet for future generations.

How Can You Participate in World Cleanup Day?

1. Engage in Local World Cleanup Events: Look for cleanup events organised by local communities, environmental groups, councils and workplaces. "Joining forces with your local community is a great way to make a serious impact. It's not just about picking up trash; it's about creating a sense of unity and shared responsibility while having those all-important conversations around waste reduction," Steele emphasises.

2. Host Your Cleanup: Take the initiative if a local event isn't available and organise your event. "Organising your cleanup event can be a very empowering experience. The fact is we can all impact waste reduction and spread the word about what we can do in our everyday lives to reduce waste and help our environment," Steele says.

3. Create Awareness: Start spreading the news on social media platforms, friends, family, and workplaces to share the importance of World Cleanup Day. "A simple post can ripple across your network and inspire others to join.”

4. Make A Daily Effort: Carry a bag and gloves on your walks or daily commute. Collecting rubbish during daily routines is a small effort that can change your local environment and create more awareness around waste.

5. Create An Environmental Plan: Consider creating your environmental plan in your household or workplace. Think of eco-conscious strategies like composting and mindful recycling. "Think reusable alternatives, consider compostable plastics and correctly recycle. It's the small changes that can make a big difference."

Addressing Waste at its Roots
Compostable plastics offer a promising solution to the world's growing plastic problem. Derived from renewable sources like corn starch, these plastics naturally break down in composting environments.
"Compostable plastics are a game-changer in the world of plastic. They alleviate plastic waste while aligning with sustainable practices. However, it's vital to ensure proper disposal of these products."

Infrastructure from a Government level also needs to be increased. "We must advocate for creating more composting facilities in our local councils to support the breakdown of these plastics," Steele says. "Allowing our waste to be transformed back into soil and encouraging the circular economy is paramount in today's world."

A Global Call for a Cleaner Tomorrow
World Cleanup Day is a powerful reminder that a worldwide collective action is needed to push change. "We need a global movement that promotes our shared responsibility towards our environment. World Cleanup Day signifies a collective effort to collect waste and reduce our major rubbish problem.”
